•Hydrophobic pyrene acids were chemically interacted with Ag nanoparticles.•1-Pyrene acids were found to adsorb on silver via the COO− bonds.•Fluorescence quenching behaviors of pyrene acids were compared on Ag.•Glutathione-triggered desorption of pyrene acids were observed in cancer cells.•1-Pyrenebutyrate showed stronger binding than 1-pyrenecarboxlyate on Ag.
