Pain characteristics as important contributing factors to upper limb dysfunctions in breast cancer survivors at long term

•More than one year after breast cancer surgery, upper limb dysfunctions are common problems.•Besides decreased shoulder range of motion and strength, pain contributes to these problems.•Pain intensity, pain quality and signs of central sensitisation are contributing factors.•Psychosocial factors such as pain catastrophizing may not be underestimated as well.
