•This study serves further insights in the clinical use of insulin degludec.•In type 1 diabetes, a lower basal insulin dose was found after starting degludec.•In type 2 diabetes, HbA1C decreased after starting degludec.•A lower number of basal insulin injections/day was observed in all patients.
