A Method for Remote Wattmeter Calibration.

In the paper a new method for remote wattmeter calibration is introduced. The implementation of such a type of calibration becomes possible if a remote and a reference wattmeter are connected to the same electrical grid and are equipped with data communication channel. This is a typical situation in smart grid. The main idea of the method is based on switching additional not necessarily precisely known load at the site of calibrated device and obtaining simultaneous active power readings of reference and calibrated devices. The acquired readings are then processed according to the proposed algorithm in order to derive multiplicative calibration coefficient of the calibrated wattmeter. The method aims to cancel the influence of an unknown media (electrical grid wiring and variety of loads) used to propagate measurement unit (active power in watts) between reference and calibrated device assuming that the characteristics of media are constant during the short calibration period. Using simulation of the proposed remote calibration setup it is demonstrated that the method ensures good calibration precision in case of typical power losses in the network.
