•BTEX can be simultaneously destructed by CaO2/Fe(II) system.•BTEX removal in CaO2/Fe(II) system was quantified by a mathematical expression.•Effects of various chelating agents were evaluated in CaO2/Fe(II) system.•HO can initiate both degradation and transformation pathways.•The destruction mechanism of the BTEX mixture was proposed.
