•Superconducting Fault Current Limiters are introduced.•SFCL operation under fault conditions is studied and its influence on protection coordination is discussed.•ATP/EMTP simulation studies of the power network with SFCL installed are performed.•Conclusions resulting from the studies related to OC protection coordination are provided.
