•Mortarless joint closure was studied using Digital Image Correlation (DIC)•DIC optimum parameters were determined to measure the joint behaviour.•Mechanical behaviour of dry joints is strongly heterogeneous and nonlinear.•This behaviour is mainly due to roughness and non-planarity of the brick faces.
