Wake effect in wind farm dynamic modelling

The accuracy of wind farm dynamic modelling is becoming important in power system dynamic simulation due to an increasing growth of wind generation. Conventionally, all wind turbines in a wind farm are lumped into a single giant one to simplify wind farm dynamics. This widely used wind farm aggregation model neglects wind turbine layout, wind direction and wake effect in particular. Comparisons between aggregated and detailed modelling performed in this paper show that the aggregated modelling significantly misrepresents wind farm generation and emulated inertia (EI) response for some wind speeds and directions. Wake effect should be considered to accurately estimate wind farm generation for a better load flow calculation. Meanwhile, a better evaluation of EI support for power system frequency control can be achieved.
