•Temperature was determinant for wound-defense resin production.•Combined resin flow effectors were as efficient as individual ones.•Resin flow effectors, except for ethylene, were less efficient in winter.•Benzoic acid and the auxin NAA individually promoted resin exudation.•NAA promoted increased β-pinene presence in defense resin relative to control.
