•Foliar application of S-ABA had no effect on sunburn in apple under South African conditions.•S-ABA had no positive effect on peel antioxidant capacity contrary to previously reported results in Japan.•S-ABA application decreased stomatal conductance and thereby also decreased the net carbon assimilation and transpiration rates.
