•Bulk-sized laminates with Ni-P and Ni were prepared by electrodeposition.•The mechanical properties of laminates are dependent on the Ni-P layer thickness.•Laminates with thin Ni-P display a desirable combination of strength and ductility.•There is a transition of dominant fracture mode from co-deformation to shear banding.
