•Study of thermal effects of an ICL-based mid-infrared methane sensor.•A LabVIEW-based program was developed to study thermal effects based on infrared absorption spectroscopy.•A temperature compensation technique was developed to control thermal effects.•CH4 measurements were conducted within a wide range of atmospheric temperature.
