Profiling and seasonal variation of chemical constituents from Pseudotsuga menziesii wood

•57 secondary metabolites are identified in Douglas-fir by LC–MS/MS.•Distribution of extractives between heartwood, sapwood and the transition zone is established.•Abundance of 35 selected metabolites is compared during four seasons.•High quantities of polyphenols is detected in autumn and spring.
