•Thermal conductivity and water diffusivity were measured on a silica gel-CaCl2 composite.•The protocol of measurement was adapted for thermochemical storage applications.•Thermal conductivity increases with water content.•Water diffusivity decreases over time due to an increase of tortuosity.
