•Network meta-analysis provided a broader picture of the evidence in the field.•Multi-component interventions are more effective than physical exercise and cognitive training.•Delivery modes for people with cognitive impairment and normal cognition differ.•In people with MCI MCTs performed separately were more effective than performed simultaneously.•To improve IADL in trials a framework on the contributing mediators has to be developed.
