•Trials assessing the effects of exercise training on cognition in COPD are scarce.•These trials are heterogeneous in their design, intervention, and outcome measures.•Pre-post training gains in at least one cognitive domain are generally observed.•Processing speed/attention/executive functions is the domain most often documented.•The verbal learning and memory domain is also noted to respond to exercise.
