The Pervasive Developmental Disorders: Diagnosis and Assessment

Autism and the other pervasive developmental disorders are particularly frequent among persons with mental retardation. Issues about diagnosis and assessment of these conditions are reviewed. The importance of a long-term collaborative relationship with parents is emphasized. Given the multiple needs of children, adolescents, and adults with these conditions, multidisciplinary collaboration is particularly important.
