•ZnO nanotubes are synthesized and analyzed its hydrogen sensing properties.•Synthesis techniques are studied to make porous structured ZnO nanotubes.•Gas sensing properties are examined as a function of microstructures of ZnO nanotubes.•Hydrogen gas sensing mechanisms of porous ZnO nanotubes are discussed.
