Electron pair emission from a Pb surface at room temperature

•A Pb surface was excited by electron excitation or photon absorption.•Electron pair emission was dectected by coincidence spectrometer.•The weakly bound 5d core levels play a role in the valence electron emission.•Low energy Auger electrons are detected in coincidence with photoelectrons.•Direct double photoemission an order of magnitude weaker than Auger process.
