Evaluating the nutrient reduction and water supply benefits of an on-farm water storage (OFWS) system in East Mississippi

•On-farm water storage (OFWS) systems reduce downstream nutrient concentrations.•OFWS system provided about 357,000 m3 of water for irrigation in 3 growing seasons.•Nutrient levels in recycled water were not sufficient to reduce fertilizer inputs.•1:3 drainage to irrigated hectares was adequate to capture water for irrigation.•Irrigation is important in East Mississippi for increasing yield.
