•Alkaline pre-treatment has a positive effect on the leaching of La(III).•Alkaline pre-treatment causes zeolite Y structural damage.•NH3 leads to more serious zeolite structural damage than NaOH.•NH3 interacts with Ni deposited in FCC particles to form complexes.•NH3 pre-treatment increase La(III) leaching yield higher than NaOH pre-treatment.
