Fabrication of PVDF hollow fiber membranes via integrated phase separation for membrane distillation

•PVDF hollow fibers were fabricated via a complex thermally induced phase separation process.•The hollow fibers showed an interpenetrating network morphology and high mechanical strength.•The hollow fibers were used in membrane distillation for desalination.•Porous inner skin endowed the fiber high permeability and high water contact.
