•Uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a CLC core and a thin polyurethane shell were produced.•2-D patterned array of CLC microcapsules on a flexible stencil led to temperature-responsive color display.•Designated registry of RGB-colored CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology.
