•Vertically aligned MoS2 nanosheets on the surface of mesoporous In2O3 nanocubes.•The interfacial transfer of electrons from In2O3 to MoS2 nanosheets.•Highly exposed edge sites of the MoS2 to enhanced gas sensing properties of the sensor.•The sensor revealed excellent response to NOx at room temperature.
