•Detrital zircon ages and Hf isotopes, Nyainqentanglha Group, central Lhasa terrane.•The earliest coarse clastic rocks in central Lhasa terrane deposited at 803 ± 5 Ma (Tonian).•Some Mesoproterozoic zircons may come from the terranes that became the Himalayas.•Neoproterozoic zircons may be derived from convergent plate margin system along NW Rodinia.•Lhasa and Himalaya may have been adjacent before Gondwana’s amalgamation.
