Rate of colonization of health care workers by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in an endemic hospital: A prospective study.

•We examined the role of health care workers in transmission of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) in a CRE endemic setting.•Out of 177 health care workers surveyed, none were carriers of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae.•Nosocomial transmission of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae probably does not occur through fecal carriage of the staff.
