Prevalence of smoking among Polish sarcoid patients

Background: The role of smoking for the development and unfavourable course of some interstitial lung diseases is well recognized.It was reported that sarcoidosis is less common in smokers than non smokers. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of smoking habits among patients(pts) with sarcoidosis. Methods: We evaluated smoking prevalence among pts admitted to a tertiary care hospital.All consecutively hospitalized pts with proven sarcoidosis were questioned about their smoking status.Questionnaire about smoking was designed and data were collected. Results: We enrolled 329pts (188 male(M) and 141 female(F),mean age 46±12y.Among them 175(104 M and 71F) have ever smoked.In ever smoked group M were younger (42±11y) than F(46 ±12y), p Conclusions: Results from the present study showed a fairly high smoking prevalence among our sarcoid pts and draws attention to relationship between parental smoking and the risk of smoking initiation.
