•Different estimates of snow covered area (SCA) profoundly affect snowmelt runoff simulations.•Sources of error from snow mapping must be minimized to prevent model over fitting.•Canopy-corrected MODSCAG SCA strongly agrees with reference SCA data from Landsat TM.•MODSCAG is suitable for snowmelt runoff simulation in small basins (<4000km2).
