Optimal Embedded Sensor Placement for Spatial Variability Assessment of Stationary Random Fields

•We propose methodology for characterization of random fields.•It aims at optimizing the number and positioning of sensors under quality requirements.•It is mainly based on random field modeling and Monte Carlo simulations.•The methodology is applied to numerical examples and two real study cases.•The results show that the approach is promising for optimal sensors positioning.
