Inflammageing and metaflammation: The yin and yang of type 2 diabetes

•Type 2 diabetes is characterized by chronic low-grade inflammation, referred as metaflammation.•Even non-obese type 2 diabetic patients experience metaflammation.•Metaflammation resembles inflammageing in terms of clinical presentation and possible pathogenic factors.•Hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia promote immune system stimulation, senescent cells accumulation, epigenetic changes, and microbiota's alterations.•Selected diets and anti-hyperglycaemic medications have the potential to ameliorate metaflammation.
