Efficacy and safety of three-times-daily versus twice-daily biphasic insulin aspart 30 in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled with basal insulin combined with oral antidiabetic drugs

•Patients with unsatisfactory HbA1c on basal insulin regimens should intensify therapy.•BIAsp 30 administered either TID or BID, + metformin, is a safe and effective option.•Treatment should be tailored to individual patient needs and preferences.•Adding a third injection at lunch may be preferable to increasing the morning dose.•The addition of a third injection before lunch does not affect the rate of hypoglycaemia.
