•Use the multivariate random parameters zero-inflated negative binomial (MVRPZINB) model to analyze three kinds of urban midblock crashes.•Show the superiority of the MVRPZINB model over other models in terms of goodness of fit and prediction accuracy.•Reveal the heterogeneous impacts of traffic operation and roadway geometric factors on crash frequency across crash types and segments.
