•The MIDUS dataset includes data from surveys and site visits for 1255 study participants.•In this national dataset, physician-reported diabetes was associated with less dietary supplement use.•Participants with eye disease, elevated cholesterol, cancer, and arthritis were more likely to take dietary supplements.
