•Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are selected by low concentrations of third-generation cephalosporins.•Ceftazidime, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone selected for multiple ESBL variants.•Ceftibuten did not select for ESBLs.•ESBL variants remained susceptible to ceftibuten.•Selective enrichment may select for ESBLs owing to de novo mutations.
