This work highlights their Contribution to Urology. METHODS A literature search including Elsevier, PubMed, and international periodicals was performed. International resources were available in English or Spanish. RESULTS Joaquin Albarran, born in Cuba in 1860, later migrated to Spain where he began his medical training and completed his degree in Paris. He developed a bladder tumor classification system, and was the first to diagnose urothelial carcinoma by identifying malignant cells in urine. He also described the Albarran- Ormond syndrome and investigated the posterior prostatic ducts now known as Albarran's glands. In 1906 he became director of Urology at Hopital Necker in Paris and became the first French urologist to perform a perineal prostatectomy. He simplified ureteral catheterization with the ′nail of Albarran′ and the ′Albarran lever′, now known as the Albarran Bridge. Founder and president of the International Society of Urology, he was posthumously nominated for a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Son of a Cuban immigrant, Ramon Guiteras was born in 1858 Rhode Island. He attended Harvard Medical School then studied throughout Europe and returned to the US to work at the New York Post Graduate Hospital, where he became Chair of Genito-Urinary Surgery. His contributions included modifications to the suprapubic prostatectomy, and publication of the text, Urology, in 1912; considered to be the premier text on the subject at that time. He founded the American Urological Association (AUA) and was elected the first president in 1902. He allowed for the AUA to distinguish itself among other urologic societies by encouraging all types of physicians with interest in the genitourinary system to join. He died unexpectedly of meningitis at 59. His contributions are commemorated by the AUA with the annual Ramon Guiteras Award, the AUA's highest honor. Jose Iglesias is another influential Cuban urologist who focused his work on transurethral resection (TUR). He is credited with introducing TUR in Cuba. While incarcerated for political reasons he is said to have invented the continuous flow resectcoscope. His design is the basis for most resectoscopes now used by urologist throughout the world. He was able to leave Cuba and move to New Jersey where he lived until his death in 1979. CONCLUSIONS Drs. Alberan, Guiteras, and Iglesias made major contributions to Urology and had a shared Cuban heritage. © 2016FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 195Issue 4SApril 2016Page: e528 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2016MetricsAuthor Information Jorge Pereira More articles by this author Ricardo Palmerola More articles by this author Jeffrey A.
