•We study the introduction of work search requirements for lone parents on welfare in the UK.•We compare outcomes over time of affected and non-affected lone parents.•Lone parents with stronger labour market attachment did move into work.•But those with lower labour market attachment were affected differently.•They were more likely to move onto health benefits or non-claimant unemployment.
