•A Food and Beverage Need for Uniqueness (FBNFU) scale was developed.•It was compared to a scale of consumers’ need for uniqueness (CNFU)•FBNFU and CNFU scales had similar means, distributions and factor solutions.•Comparison with other trait scales confirmed convergent and discriminant validity.•High vs. Low FBNFU groups’ responses to food names confirmed predictive validity.
