•1-D freezing behavior assessment of ice-rich sandy soil considering the phase change of water.•Numerical simulation model shows reliable prediction results for 1-D freezing test.•Freezing behavior of ice-rich sandy soil are dependent on various geotechnical properties.•The larger the porosity of the specimen, the greater the increase in the time for fully frozen.•Height of specimen has the greatest impact on the time for fully frozen.
