•Long waves of weak nonlinearity through coastal vegetation is studied by applying the homogenization theory.•The numerical results obtained by linear and nonlinear models are compared.•Harmonic generation within the vegetated area is investigated.•The behaviors of different harmonic components are discussed.•The effects of different physical parameters on wave solutions are also investigated.
