Valorisation of olive mill wastewater by phenolic compounds adsorption: Development and application of a procedure for adsorbent selection

•Procedure for adsorbent selection for phenolic compounds (PC) recovery is proposed.•Procedure is applied to a case-study of PC adsorption from olive mill wastewater.•Procedure includes isotherms, breakthrough tests, desorbed product characterization.•Resin XAD16: best performances in isotherms and dynamic tests at 20% breakpoint.•Resins XAD16 and IRA958 OH: similar performances in dynamic tests at resin saturation.
