•Apomixis have been associated with ploidy and genome size differences.•Sporophytic apomixis was linked to Cerrado hexaploid/ polyembryonic Eriotheca.•Apomictic trees differed but overlapped in fruit and seed morphology.•Sexual trees appeared in higher areas, allegedly last glacial maximum Cerrado refugia.•Apomicts may have spread more rapidly after LGM to lower and southernmost areas.
