Subjective experience of poetry: Latent structure and differences between experts and non-experts

•A four-factor structure of subjective experience of poetry is found in experts.•Non-experts have a less complex structure of subjective experience than experts.•Non-experts do not distinguish between poem evaluation and its characteristics.•Use of a broader set of adjectives enables a more complex structure in non-experts.
