•Chronic unpredictable mild stress protocol represents a reliable model for modeling depression in rodents.•Difficulties in reproducing of stress protocol might be explained by modification of chronic unpredictable mild stress and sucrose preference protocols.•Numerous factors, such as the nature of the stressor, housing conditions and features of the organism should be considered when employing chronic unpredictable mild stress model.
