•The highest LIDT of (BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 films is 4.28 J/cm2.•(BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 is attractive candidate to substitute bulk MO material.•Surface defects, residual melt and α significantly affecting LIDT.•Lattice mismatch will affect damage morphologies of (BiTm)3(GaFe)5O12 films.
