•Some but not all varieties of scalar inferences are cognitively demanding.•The presence of a processing cost depends on the scalarity of the scalar word.•Results for ‘some’ and ‘or’ cannot be generalised to all scalar words.•Processing data are compatible with the automatic computation of scalar inferences.
