Cloud Deployment Of Pss/E For Large Scale Power System Dynamic Simulations

Dynamic simulation plays a critical role in modern power system planning and operations. These studies are computationally intensive due to the need of solving a large number of differential-algebraic equations to during the time-domain solution. Cloud computing provides a new paradigm for easy access to large-scale computing resources over the Internet, thus offering an excellent solution to big data processing and heavy computational work. This paper shares ISO New England's experience on a pilot deployment of PSS/E software in a public cloud for dynamic simulations using Amazon Web Services. The platform can successfully meet the heavy computing needs of dynamic simulations in power system planning studies in a cost-effective way without compromising cyber security and data privacy requirements.
