摘要

•The mineralization of the carbonates has been studied in the presence of HPMC.•The effect of HPMC concentration and Mg/Ca molar ratios has been investigated.•The existence of HPMC could lead to the formation of metastable aragonite phase.•The Mg2+ inhibits the growth of calcite and facilitates the production of aragonite.•The crystal growth mechanism has been elaborated with help of polarizing microscope.
