•The effect of time-dependent delayed energy is investigated for slow and fast transient problems.•For operational depletion, the effect of the time-dependent delayed heat is small.•For a PWR rod ejection, the time-dependent model increases the overall energy release by 7%.•The accuracy of scaling the spatial energy deposition of delayed gamma rays is affirmed.
