•KNbO3, KSr2Nb5O15, K0.5Bi2.5Nb2O9 have been synthesized by using Nb2O5 nanorods.•The morphology of the products depends on the it’s [NbO6] octahedrons combination.•Perovskite niobate is conducive to the succession of morphology of Nb2O5 template.
