3D Pattern Optimization Using PSO for an Irregular Dual-Layer Circular Array

Smart Antenna System (SAS) is one of the latest hot topics in both academic and industry. It is regarded as the antenna solution for the future generations of wireless communication system. Phased array is widely used in SAS. However, problems at size, cost and meeting the industrial regulations, for example, the sidelobe level, remains. Current studies in array pattern optimization is limited to linear array with one dimension in polar space. Such optimizer is not sufficient to cope with current complex array designs. In this paper, a design of 3D pattern optimizer using popular optimization algorithm, namely Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), is presented. The renovated optimizer is put to tests on a complex array setup, which is a dual-layer circular array with center element.
